Von Who?

Von U gets its name from Erik von Willebrand (1870-1949), the internist whose insight led to the discovery of VWD.

  • von Willebrand mapped the family history of a 5-year-old girl from Finland with excessive bleeding
  • In the process, von Willebrand learned the disorder was equally likely to affect men and women, and that it was distinctly different from hemophilia

Now that you know where the disease got its name, start learning more about VWD.
